From HUMBLE Beginnings to GLOBAL CollaborationS

Protex began as a small company in 1966 in Ålen, Norway. After becoming a cornerstone enterprise in its local community, the company took the next step by expanding operations to Estonia.

From starting small to daring to think bigger, our vision — “We make great ideas happen” — has guided us from day one and continues to shape our journey into the future.

Protex Balti is a Norwegian-owned family company with deep roots in textile production and product development.

Founded in Norway in 1966 and expanded to Estonia in 1996, we have grown into a team of over 200 professionals in Norway and Estonia, dedicated to turning great ideas into reality.

Our mission is to create smarter, more sustainable textile solutions through craftsmanship, technology, and strong partnerships. We combine decades of experience with a culture of professionalism and continuous improvement, always striving to grow together with our clients.

At Protex Balti, we specialize in the development and manufacturing of advanced textile products. We are proud to partner with leading brands such as Trimtex (sportswear), Hilleberg (tents), Ottobock (mobility and independence solutions), and Hansen Protection (survival suits, thermal protective aids, and marine covers).

We also collaborate with prestigious Finnish fashion and lifestyle brands, uniting sustainability, timeless design, and craftsmanship.

Sustainability and responsibility guide every step of our work - from material selection and production processes to long-term partnerships.

As we continue to evolve, our goal remains clear - to shape the future of textiles through innovation, reliability, and respect for people and the planet.

OUR HISTORY

1966–1973
Start-up and establishment

In 1966, David Engan bought the estate following the previous operation of Trønderplast. It all began with the production of rainwear for the construction and fishing industries in a basement in Ålen, Norway, with just a couple of employees. During this period, Trønderplast became a limited company and moved into its own industrial building.

1974–1993
Cornerstone company

The contract and cooperation with HÅG marked a significant breakthrough at the beginning of this period. The focus was on mass production for our key customer, and we became their textile partner through a close and integrated collaboration. During the same period, ABS Shooting was acquired, leading to the development and production of clothing for competitive shooters. This was the start of international trade, and the company changed its name to Protex.

1994–2010
The start of Protex Balti in Estonia

The business expanded, and necessary steps were taken to enhance competitiveness in terms of capacity, competence, and cost efficiency. At the beginning of this period, Protex started rental production in Estonia. Later, we acquired a company in Hummuli, relocated to Pärnu alongside a new customer, Trimtex, and established a presence in Tallinn.

2010–2011
Change of direction

After 38 years of close partnership, our contract with HÅG ended. Production in Norway was terminated, and 40% of our capacity in Estonia had to be reduced. Protex shifted its focus toward a new direction, emphasizing the development of “several feet to stand on,” while remaining within the textile industry:

Public tenders (framework contracts) – field boots for the Norwegian Armed Forces and gala uniforms for the Police
Sportswear (Trimtex, our key customer)
Development of own brands

2011–2023
Build-up and development

During this period, Protex focused on building and developing existing and new markets and customers, while reorganizing operations in Estonia: head office in Tallinn and production across three factories in Tallinn, Pärnu, and Pärnu-Jaagupi. Additionally, Protex started developing its own brands and manufacturing niche products. Cooperation with footwear partners Samelin and Soleeest was also established.
