TexMat:

Automated Collection and Sorting Solution for Consumer Textiles

Protex Balti is contributing to a new EU-funded project to pilot a deposit-return system for used textiles across Europe. Known as TexMat, the initiative will reward consumers for returning reusable and recyclable garments, while notifying producers when discarded textiles require proper waste management.

TexMat will use automated collection containers to assess textile quality and capture key information about the materials and product history through digital product passports, set to be introduced across the EU in the near future. The project builds on mandatory textile collection and extended producer responsibility (EPR) to tackle textile waste and its environmental impacts.

With 14 partners across seven EU countries, TexMat develops scalable technologies, business models, and policy tools that extend product lifecycles and support a circular textile economy, contributing to EU climate and sustainability goals.

Protex Balti contributes industrial expertise across multiple garment categories, helping ensure digital product passport integration works reliably in real-world manufacturing. The focus is on creating durable, long-lasting products without compromising comfort or brand design.

The initiative is funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation program.
